The 1900 Barber Half Dollar
The 1905-S Barber Quarter
1897-S Barber Quarter
1894-O Quarter
1902 Philadelphia Barber Dime. If it was a 1901-S Barber Dime, the price would be $350 in fine shape, as they made only 593 thousand.

MXT's Platinum Find.

This hobby always surprises me.  You never know what will be in your scoop or the bottom of the hole.  On 10/15/2009, I had just completed a quick run to the hardware store and took the opportunity to make an impromptu scouting hunt of the Middle School next door.   The fields behind the school were lush with thick grass.  I had hunted these fields last year any they produced probably $50 in clad coins but no good jewelry finds. The fields get a big work-out from local youth sports teams and fans.
I am a respectful hobbyist and wanted in no way to deface the beautiful sporting fields.  My MXT, mounted with a White’s  4 x 6 Eclipse Coil immediately ran out with a Quarter target.  I was just scouting the area so I passed it by.  The next couple targets showed shallow Pop Top VDI’s and I likewise passed them by.  But the next target showed a target 4 inches down with VDI  in the higher gold range and this very much caught my interest.  I had to dig it!  I carefully moved a plug of sod but the target was still deeper. A trowel scoop of soil was then placed on a piece of plastic.  Only then a smaller glimmer of silver peeked out from the side of the hole.  Drat….a Pop Top, I thought!  I dug out the target and it was a shining yellow gold and silverish HEAVY ring was in my hand.  To my surprise the inside was stamped Pl .95  750.   A friendly local jeweler interpreted this inscription as 95% Platinum Band with 18 k Yellow Gold accent. This is my first Platinum find in 6 years of detecting! Shown in the picture is a second lesser 10 k ring found in a different schoolyard the previous day.
Although I have several machines, most of my better finds have been made with my faithful White’s MXT.  I purchased my MXT from and was trained by Gerry McMullen of Gerry’s Detectors in Boise, ID.

Hi Gerry,

I found this a couple of weeks ago with my Minelab Explorer SE at Eagle Island State Park, among the cow patties.  Thanks for everything you offer.

We just got to Boise yesterday after returning from Quartzsite. I took a few days and stopped at Gold Basin to check out the area. The first day just after I started out I got a small nugget. That meteoritewas it for gold the next 3 days. The second day I encountered a Green Mohave rattler and also got into this meteorite patch of 9 Stony Meteorites. Everything checks out on their identity. They were in a patch about 30ft. wide X 50/60 ft. long. The largest rock was at the head of the patch and the rest were training away to the SW. Whats interesting is they were found on the edge of the L4 meteorite patch that ASU studied a few years back. They recovered 140 rocks for the study.  Don't know if they are of that patch or an overlapping one. Neat rocks that are 4.5 billion years old from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Theres no doubt when you hear one, a definite hit and almost on the surface.
Enjoy

I was one of those newbies who purchased a gold detector and kept putting off formal gold nugget training. I watched all the DVD's and videos, and after 3 years of on and off detecting at poorgold sites, I finally read a magazine article on nugget hunting training that caught my attention. I then pulled up Gerry's Metal Detectors web site and read the article on "How To Become a Successful Nugget Hunter" and was sold! I called Gerry McMullen in Boise, Idaho and upgraded to the Minelab GPX-5000 and scheduled my 3-day training session at Rye Patch, NV. Gerry sends each trainee a series of e-mails with details on the camp site, what to bring and expect from the 3-day session. The long 850 mile trip from Colorado to Rye Patch was a trip thru some of the most beautiful and unusual scenery that I have ever seen. The first day of training finally came and it was devoted to classroom training and minelab gpx5000learning all of the tools required to become successful in the field. The 13 trainees met Gerry, Spencer, Mark and Ron(Team Nugget Buster) at the camp site and we were split up into small groups to learn our machines. On Saturday we went out in the field and were shown a few good target signals that Gerry's Team had located the night before. We got to hear the signals with our detectors and watched as the targets were removed from the soil. Then we were released to hunt with our trainers plugged-in to our machines. While hunting an area on my own with my trusty 17" EM coil, I came across the soft wee ooh signal we were taught to listen for and dug out my first gold nugget with the GPX 5000! The 1.9 gram chevron gold nugget was about 8" deep and the signal kept getting louder as I dug deeper, which is one of the many tips we were taught. I wasn't sure who was more excited, Gerry or I when I gave him the nugget. Everyone took a quick look and we went back to hunting. I then found another target and located a specimen with gold about 10 feet from the chevron nugget's hole. What an exciting day and we still had one more full day to hunt the huge Rye Patch area and find more gold. We must have searched at least eight different sites that weekend and Gerry made sure everyone had a ride to the hunt locations. First off, let me give a big thank you to my trainers as I would have never had the skills, knowledge and site research to find the gold...priceless. Gerry has really put together a great team of professional nugget hunter's to train his customers. They taught me about setting up the GPX 5000, how to expertly Ground Balance your machine, what mineralized soil looks and sounds like, what double signals mean, how to protect power cords and connectors, etc. etc, etc.. The thrill and excitement of finding my first gold nugget were fantastic and I'm hooked for life. Folks it's been said before, but there is nothing more important than professional hands-on in the field training! Just about everyone found some gold with the Minelab GPX's and Gold Bug 2 nugget detectors during those 3 days, made some new friends and the experience was truly a blast!

Here are some finds at the recent hunt in Virginia.  My customer has used most all detectors to getbullet best depth and now the gravy is gone.  The only machines that can continually produce good finds now are the Minelab GPX detectors.  The GPX-4500 did its job and kicked the competitions butt, just like it was designed to do.  Virginia soils are some of the worst in the US and the Pros know what works best.

The newer GPX-4800 and GPX-5000 can do just the same or better.

Below are the comments from my customer and also attached 2 photos of the finds.

Gerry

Gerry, the pictures are from a hunt held at Orange Va. on 900 acres that Stonewall Jackson cuffcamped for 6 days before the battle of Cedar Mountain.
The buttons include a SC cuff and a Virginia cuff and 3 Belgian 69 cal and 1 69 cal Gardner, 1 carved bullet and 1 nipple protector, almost all of the finds were confederate, the 4500 worked perfect.

I heard about Gerry's training through a partner of mine that has claim on a hard rock mine in Alaska.  I attended knowing virtually nothing about detecting. In fact I am still amazed that Igold attended at such a spur of the moment. My partner told me that Gerry's has a good reputation on training and boy did I need the training. I had a preconcieved notion that I would be treated more or less like a third twinkie in that I had not purchased our minelab 4500 elsewhere. I just assumed that I wouldn't get the hands on training because there wasn't much of an investment from Gerry's from me.... Well to make a long story short I was pleasantly surprised, I was treated no different than I would have been had I spent $10,000 It was refreshing. It was hard! It was educational! and it was worth every penny.  I am convinced that without the training in not only the basics but the little hints that make detecting more profitable, I would still be shaking my head. Do I have it mastered? not by a long shot but I will learn that tone that will pay dividends in the long run. And like I told Gerry: "You are smart to include anyone and everyone in your training because we all know that customer service is a thing of the recent past and it is hard to find anyone that recognizes the value of good ole common denominator courtesy. Gerry and his staff have figured it out!!! I wouldn't go out to the desert and sleep in the back of my truck if it wasn't worth it.... I can only say thanks and by the way, I did find a nugget!! Well Ron (Gerry's staff) found it, he just wouldn't let me leave until I dug it up..

Thanks Gerry!

Thank you for being such great dealer. I really appreciate your help in ronkeeping me in the field while my detector was being repaired. I am attaching some photos of the desert gold I found in the last 3 weeks using the Minelab GPX 4800. The nuggets total weight is just a hair over a 1/2 ounce. That sure is a quiet machine! The Minelab GPX 4800 was easy to use and allowed me to hear the faint signals on ground that had been extensively worked over. Thanks again. I don't know of any other dealer that would have helped me out like you did. Sincerely, Ron
