Upgrading from Minelab GP-3000 to the GPX-4000

After finding several ounces of Gold Nuggets with my GP-3000, and hearing many great things about the GPX-4000, I decided to make the upgrade. I purchased my original detector from Gerry’s Detectors of Idaho.

Gerry had given me the field training that had helped me become successful with my GP-3000.

The first obvious change to new GPX-4000 was the LCD screen, which has eliminated a lot of knobs and switches that were always getting bumped and changed while in transport.

The settings that are programs on your machine when you turn it off, are the same when you turn it back on. Also the battery pack is half the weight, which makes a huge difference on your back and shoulders by the end of the day.

After swinging the new 4000 for just a short while, I was impressed with how quiet it was. It seemed to not be affected as badly by ground mineralization. This single benefit has already proven to be worthy of the upgrade. Very small targets that would or could have easily been drowned out by ground noise could now be picked up.

Constantly ground balancing your machine is very important in my opinion, and Minelab has made this a much easier task. Pushing the button on the top of the grip is much easier than reaching to the underside of your machine with every balance.

There are several other nice features with the 4000 that give the user more control. Such as adjusting the gain to accommodate the higher and lower levels of mineralized ground, and get peak sensitivity. You can even use the search modes to pre-program your own personal sets of settings for different areas, as soil conditions differ in each location. I also really like being able to check the charge on my battery from time to time. I have not had to walk back to the truck with a dead battery yet.

If you are considering an upgrade to a GPX or are purchasing your 1st., and are serious about gold detecting, I would say the benefits are worth it.  The 3 Days of Field Trainings is a MUST HAVE and Gerry’s Detectors of Boise, Idaho is the ONLY DEALER to offer this.

I attribute most of my Success to Gerry’s Detectors and strongly recommend his services.
