I have been prospecting on and off for twelve years, panning, dredging and high banking.  I received a gold metal detector for Christmas last year, something I’ve wanted to do for a number of years.  Used the detector several times on the local rivers in Western Washington, found some trash and lead, but no gold.  Kept reading about how long it takes most people to find the first nugget, usually a year or longer.  So before investing in a major gold metal detecting trip, I decided I needed training from a professional.

I contacted Gerry McMullen at Gerry’s Metal Detectors, in Boise Idaho.  After talking with Gerry, I knew I was on the right track.  We made arrangements to spend several days training and detecting in Eastern Oregon.  Gerry starts the training out by explaining how to use the detector, and most importantly, how to correctly ground balance the detector for the best results on the small gold.  Gerry uses a two-way connector on the detector so that you’re both hearing the same signals; this really helps in learning how to identify the faint signals from the smallest of targets.

Gerry does not guarantee that you will find gold.  Gerry states “I will guarantee that those who buy the machine that I recommend, the items to go with it that I recommend, detect where I detect for gold and go with me for at least
3 days or on 3 outings, that they will find gold”.  I can personally vouch for that, I had what I thought was a good pair of headphones, paid $80+ for them.  Was having trouble hearing the faint signals.  Tried the headphones that Gerry recommends, there was a world of difference, the signals were much crisper and easier to hear.  We also found fourteen pieces of gold on the trip, from .3 grams on down.
