About 95% of the people who detect at Ganes will
end up finding the largest nugget that they have
ever found in their detecting career. I
personally have been nugget hunting since 1996
and my 4 largest nuggets have all come from
Ganes Creek, Alaska.
How much gold will the average person find?
That is really hard to answer because if one
person finds a 12 oz’er then the group average
goes up real fast. I don’t look at the Ganes
Trip as to how many nuggets I find..heck, I can
find more pieces of gold in the lower 48 states
at the areas I currently detect. But it is the
opportunity to find a large nugget that keeps me
coming back and this year I just so happened to
do it twice.
A customer and good friend of mine Gary C from
Arkansas found hardly any gold that 1st
year he was up there, but I enjoyed the other
things going on and even witnessed his friends
find large nuggets. Gary went back the
following year and found over 22 ounces of gold
and many of them were really nice nuggets.
Tris S from Oregon found over 7 ounces the 1st
year and she had never ran a gold detector
before. She in fact borrowed one from a
friend. This year Tris did not have much luck
at Ganes and only found 1 really nice nugget.
BUT she did make up for it at the England trip
with an extremely rare bronze age BC axe head.
If you are wanting to find as many pieces as you
can, then use a Fisher Gold Bug-2 with small 6”
elliptical coil and work the benches. I have
found over 40 pieces in an hour in certain
spots. But now that is not my style and I am
after the “TROPHY NUGGETS” the Nuggets of a
Lifetime.
If you have the desire to swing a detector for a
week, then you have a really good chance of
breaking your largest nugget record.
Can you get the big “O” and not find a nugget?
It could possibly happen. Of the 50+ people who
I have been up there with on all the trips, I
have only seen one guy not find a nugget, so yes
it could happen.
Just like going on vacation to Hawaii for a week
and hoping to catch a Marlin. You spend the
money and make the best of the trip regardless
of what happens. Only thing is at Ganes..you
should find gold and more than likely will
witness a 1 or 2 ounce nugget being found and
possibly a 5 oz’er or bigger.
I have done 4 different weeks at Ganes in 3
different years and I feel that I have a pretty
good understanding of how to make your odds much
greater than the average Joe.
1)
Be in shape and ready to walk, dig, bend
over and get on your knees at times.
2)
Know your detector before you get to
Ganes.
3)
Move fast and cover a lot of ground.
4)
Dig as many non-ferrous targets as you
can in a day and do it every day.
5)
If you are after a “Trophy Nugget” then
get in the brush or away from easy walking
areas.
6)
Be willing to detect all day long and not
find a single nugget. It happens to the best of
us.
7)
Stay focused and keep a cool collective
head..Yes you will get disappointed and may even
be miserable at time from the mosquitoes.
8)
Pace yourself and don’t over-do-it the 1st
couple days.
9)
Think Positive and say “Today’s the Day”
every morning.
10)
Be sure to take photos and “Have Fun”
because you will be able to share this
experience with you family and friends for the
rest of your life and may even have some gold to
prove it. |
